How to Play Two Truths One Lie

  1. 1 Enter 2–10 player names on the setup screen and tap Start Game
  2. 2 Each player gets the phone privately — type 3 statements about yourself and mark which one is the lie
  3. 3 Review your statements, then pass the phone to the next player until everyone has written theirs
  4. 4 For each player's turn, everyone else taps the statement they think is the lie — pass the phone to each guesser
  5. 5 After all guesses are in, the lie is revealed — truth cards flip green, the lie flips red
  6. 6 Score points for correct guesses (Best Detective) and fool the most people to become the Best Liar

Tips & Variations

  • 01Make your lie believable by keeping it close to the truth — tiny details are harder to detect than wild stories
  • 02Mix obvious truths with one subtle lie to throw off clever guessers who expect you to play it safe
  • 03Add a drinking rule — everyone who guesses wrong takes a sip, the writer drinks if everyone guesses right
  • 04After the reveal, ask the writer to explain the real story behind each truth — often more interesting than the lie
  • 05Play multiple rounds with the same group to learn surprising things about friends you thought you knew well
  • 06For a harder challenge, allow players to ask one follow-up question before they guess
  • 07At work or family events, use the Personal category style and keep statements light and fun for all ages

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play Two Truths One Lie?

Each player secretly types two true statements and one lie about themselves, marking which is the lie. Then everyone else guesses which statement is the lie. Score a point for each correct guess. The player who fools the most people wins the Best Liar title.

How many players do you need?

Two Truths One Lie works with as few as 2 players, though it's most fun with 4–8 players. With more players, guessing results are more unpredictable and the reveals become more exciting. It's a perfect free online party game for any group size.

Is this a good icebreaker game?

Yes — Two Truths One Lie is one of the most popular icebreaker games in the world. It's perfect for new groups, work events, school orientations, or any gathering where people want to learn surprising things about each other in a fun, low-pressure way.

Can it be used as a drinking game?

Absolutely! Add a house rule where every wrong guess means a sip. If the writer fools everyone, they pick who drinks. If everyone guesses correctly, the writer drinks. It's a no-download, mobile-friendly drinking game that works on any phone.

Is Two Truths One Lie free?

Completely free — no account, no download, no in-app purchases. Just open the page on any phone or computer and start playing instantly. All game data stays on your device.

How does the private writing screen work?

When it's your turn to write, the phone is passed to you privately. Other players shouldn't look while you type your three statements and mark your lie. Once you confirm, the phone is passed to the next writer.

What makes a good lie?

The best lies are grounded in truth — pick something plausible that fits your personality. Slightly exaggerated versions of real events, activities your friends know you've tried, or places you could realistically have visited work best as convincing lies.

How is scoring calculated?

You earn one point for each player whose lie you correctly identify (Best Detective score). Your Best Liar score counts how many players you fooled with your lie. Both scores are shown on the final scoreboard.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes — Two Truths One Lie is fully mobile-responsive and built for pass-and-play on a single smartphone. No extra apps or devices needed. Works on iOS, Android, and all modern browsers.

Can I play with just 2 people?

Yes! With 2 players the game becomes an intense head-to-head bluffing challenge. Each person writes their statements and tries to fool just one opponent — perfect for couples, friends, or a quick game when you're waiting somewhere.

Fun Ways to Play

Two Truths One Lie is endlessly flexible — try these popular variations:

🧊 Icebreaker Game

Start any new group event or team meeting with a round. Keep statements professional and fun. By the end, everyone knows five surprising facts about their teammates without any awkward introductions.

🍻 Drinking Party Mode

Add a sip penalty for every wrong guess. If the writer fools the entire group, everyone drinks. If nobody is fooled, the writer drinks. Easy house rules that make every reveal twice as entertaining.

👫 Date Night Twist

Two players, deep statements. Learn things about your partner you never knew — favourite childhood memory, secret skill, almost-happened life decision. Reconnect through honest storytelling.

🎂 Birthday Edition

Dedicate an entire round to the birthday person. All guests write statements that include the birthday person (things they've done together) — the birthday person guesses which statement is the lie.

🏕️ Road Trip Version

No content to load — purely player-created. Perfect for long car rides or anywhere with no signal. Everyone is the content, so the game works indefinitely without ever repeating.
